Schoolhouse Teachers.com Review

I am getting the chance to try out the SchoolhouseTeachers.com site which is a division of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. Let me just say that, WOW, there is so much on this site. This is a membership site that costs $5.95 a month. If you want to try it out they are doing a special where you get your first month for only $1 right now.

This site is designed for you to use it however you need. Whether you are looking for a full curriculum or you just want some supplemental work, you can incorporate as much or little of the site into your school that you need. There are downloadable worksheets, e-books and video’s for you to choose from.  Also members have access to digital back issues of the Old Schoolhouse Magazine.

menuI love how easy this site is to navigate. On the home page you immediately see different sections on the menu bar that divides the contents up so you can find things fairly quickly.  Categories include: Teachers, Pre-k/Elementary, Middle School, High School, Family, Dailies, Extras, Library and you can even view samples and take a site tour. I found the Site tour to be very helpful.

Under each category you will find the topics divided up again. Under Teachers you have a lesson archives of all the past lessons from the year.  Pre-K/Elementary, Middle School and High School have course lists, math, writing, history and science lessons and so much more. The family section includes special needs, music and college choice guidance as well as a monthly reading list. The Library section contains e-Books, Crafts, Art and many other subjects and in the Dailies sections you find a  few of my favorites “This Day in History” and “Everyday Explorers” and yet there are still so much more to discover. Plus don’t forget that under the Extra’s section you can get  your planners. You also have access to a free e-Book each month.

this day in historyMy kids and I spent this past week doing the “This Day in History” studies.  You can download the entire months summary in PDF form with links of the downloads for each days lesson. Along with site links/suggestions there is usually an activity, questions or games for you to do with your kids.

I found the lesson’s easy to use, download and prepare for ahead of time. All the information is right there you just click, print and go. This past week we studied about Gilbert Charles Stuart, the painter of one of the most famous portraits in America, the portrait of President George Washington that we see on our one dollar bill. Then we studied about The Franciscan mission in Santa Barbara, Columbus discovery of Haiti, the 15th Amendment to the Constitution and Pearl Harbor.

We loved that you can easily adapt the lessons to be used with any age or grade. My 2nd grader enjoyed the lessons, especially the art work they did on the 1st two days, and my 6th and 7th graders enjoyed the research aspect. Some of the subjects piqued their curiosity more so than others. Overall they really seemed to enjoy it.

I do believe for us it will be used as a supplemental curriculum and I am looking forward to incorporating more of it throughout our school year.

I would have liked for there to be more “fun” activities for the particular lessons we did, but overall it is a well planned out site with a lot to offer. I believe the price is very fair for the amount of product offered and very affordable for even the tightest budget.
